![]() ![]() There are two primitive campsites on the beach south of Parking Lot 5, and there are 11 primitive campsites on islands in the lagoon that are accessible only by boat. They are separated by a thin 10-mile stretch of pristine beach known as Klondike, inaccessible to all but the most hardy. You cannot reach the North District from the South, or vice versa. In all, the beach road offers access to four miles of stunning beaches from 13 spacious parking lots.Įddy Creek, remnants of an inlet that once broke through the barrier island, is a popular launch area for your paddle board or kayak. Throw in a popular nude beach at the end of the road, and you can understand why this is the more popular entrance to Canaveral National Seashore. The South District is accessible from Titusville via State Road 402, which cuts through Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and abuts the northern boundary of the Kennedy Space Center. I love to snake between islands in search of oyster bars and clam beds where I can cast a line in the hunt for tailing redfish. The State House has been restored with a museum showcasing the history of the area. Kayaks, paddle-boards and canoes can be launched here, or at several other designated areas.Ī few miles south, take the turnoff to Eldora and drive slowly through subtropical tree hammocks to the Eldora State House, once the center of a small agricultural community. A viewing platform offers sweeping panoramas of dunes, beaches and the islands of the Indian River Lagoon. Turtle is the largest shell midden in the country, 600 feet long and rising 50 feet. ![]() Near the entrance, visit Turtle Mound, a prehistoric archaeological site where native Timucuan Indians discarded their shells for centuries. Near-shore sandbars there corral fish on outgoing tides, giving you a leg up when casting into rip currents between sandbars. Surf-fishers are first to arrive (Lots 2-4). ![]()
